Something smells in Siberia

My new favorite Mom-ism: While enjoying lunch my mother attempted to employ the use of the phrase "something is rotten in Denmark" to mean that there was something suspicious about a friend's situation. Instead it came out as, "Something smells in Siberia". Hee.

I got back from Tomball yesterday, where I had gone for a dental appointment and ended up staying to close the store on Friday night. Sigh.

I'm still getting into the new school routine. It's really quite the change from my usual schedule, but I'm enjoying it. Procrastination has begun already, but on the bright side, I have, at least, done my required reading for Czech Lit.

Speaking of which, where has Czech Lit been all my life? How is it that I have missed out on the brilliance and hilarity of Czech satire? I think this class is easily going to be one of my very favorites. It's just cool. There's a wide variety of students represented in the class, too -- not just English majors -- so my grade is probably a guaranteed A. The only drawback is the prescribed essay questions: after last semester's free reign in essay writing with Dr. Kevorkian, going back to the professor's choice is going to be a bit of an annoyance. On the other hand, my professor is really laid-back, and if I happened to come up with a good topic he probably would allow me to write it.

We had a Czech student from Prague sitting in on our class, with whom I talked a bit on Thursday. He is, in my opinion, rather attractive (though that may also have to do with the fact that he's pursuing his doctorate (I believe) in literature, and I do have somewhat of a predilection for lit geeks and educated foreign men). I don't know if he's going to continue observing the class or not.

On a totally digressive note, have I ever complained about UT spam before? UT sends me a number of notices from my departments and all sorts of other "official" crap on a regular basis, and it annoys me. But, that's not nearly as irksome as the insane amount of spam I've been getting recently, which I have reason to believe is not caused, but certainly enabled, by UT's non-secure student directory, where you can find ALL of my contact information with no effort. I'm getting those oh-so-delightful "enhancement" spam mails, and I've noticed that on each of them, the entire recipient list has a mail.utexas.edu address. Rrrg.

Good news, though: They finally have me in the system as an English major, with a degree audit and everything. Woo! I'm lacking 21 hours for my Art degree, and 24 for my English. Some of those are overlapping hours (I need some of the same classes for both degrees). So little left...

Oh, in other news, a cat update: As it turned out, the cat's nosebleed wouldn't stop, so I had to haul her in to the vet. Forty-five minutes and $80 later, I was told that nothing was fractured, but the kitten had burst a large capillary and would probably just keep bleeding until it finally clotted. The vet administered a cortizone shot to keep the swelling down and sent us on our way. The cat kept bleeding until later in the night, and acted somewhat docile for a few hours, but otherwise was her normal evil self. Stupid cat.
