So. School.
Even though I'm only taking a scant 12 hours this semester, I'm still going to have a tremendous amount of work. Three of my classes are "extensive writing component" courses, and the fourth is a studio.
That being said... yay for cool classes!! Even my English history class seems enjoyable. My professor is one of those types who likes to hear himself talk, which is fine for a lecture class, but he also entertains random questions and goes off on fun tangents. Lots of books and essay writing -- but then, I skipped through my essay-laden American history class and got an A without reading a single novel. I can take this, especially since I actually intend to read the required books.
Creative writing is going to be a blast... but we already knew that. My prof is Kent Nelson, who is published, but I'd never heard of him (have any of you guys, by chance?) Anyway, he seems to be really focused on ideas and crafting a world and a plot -- which is just what I need.
20th Century Czech Lit... is a surprise. I mean, I was somewhat interested in it, sure, but I didn't think it would be as engaging as it is. My prof is a translator of Czech literature, and is perhaps a bit partial to those with Czech names -- so I'm already on his good side. (On a side note, the name "Krenek" supposedly has something to do with horseradishes.) My professor reminds me of David Spade, with a very similar tone of voice and sense of humour. I've barely started reading The Good Soldier Svejk by Jaroslav Hasek, but already I have this feeling that I'm going to really identify with the sarcasm and dry wit of Czech writers (so my twisted humour is somewhat connected to my heritage... it all makes sense now).
Painting class is with Bradley, who taught me while I was in Italy. I've heard he's usually much more critical than he was with the classes abroad, and I'm looking forward to that. He's starting us out with a two-day painting instead of a lame two-hour painting like I'm so used to at the beginning of a semester. Thank goodness.
In other news, yesterday the kitten fell into the tub as the water was draining, and thoroughly freaked herself out. She is much more cautious of the bathroom now. Today she ran into the wall and gave herself a nosebleed. I was mildly concerned at first, but after consulting one of those weird cat people about the issue, I was reassured that the cat is probably fine. She certainly seems to be acting like her usual annoying self. And hopefully she's also learned not to go running round at top speed toward solid objects.
