Don't you wish you were in New Orleans right now? I do. Happy Mardi Gras, everyone.
It would appear that I am starting tomorrow's fast today -- but it's more a lack of desire to grocery shop than an act of repentance and contrition. I have, however, decided what I will be spending the next forty days without. Micki actually proposed this idea some time ago, and after a lot of consideration, I have taken her suggestion.
I will be giving up milk for Lent, and replacing it with soy milk.
This may not seem like much to many of you -- but believe me, this is a rather hefty sacrifice. You see, while I can accept a bowl of cereal with soy milk, or use the stuff in cooking, I cannot, and will not, drink soy in my coffee. Thus, without real milk, I will be unable to have a latte. So, through removing milk from my diet, I am also removing a large portion of my caffeine intake, since I drink lattes like water. I won't even be able to walk into work without being constantly reminded of the Lenten season.
However, while I won't cheat and drink lots of caffe breves, I am making an exception for half-and-half. It's not entirely milk, after all, and without it I'd have to give up coffee almost completely -- and that would probably kill me.
But in the spirit of Mardi Gras, I'm going to bring some of my "contraband" hazelnut syrup to work tonight, and enjoy the last of my lattes without the cheap, nasty Starbucks syrup. Mm, hazelnut lattes... how I will miss you.
