Yesterday was a pretty disastrous day. It all started in ceramics. Everything was going well until about 30 minutes before class ended, when I noticed that my large vase-like sculpture was beginning to look kind of lopsided. I assumed this was merely due to a miscalculation in my "calculated" manipulations, so I tried to rectify this problem. Ten seconds later, my clay structure had caved in on itself, and suddenly gained a resemblance to a large, cracked and misshapen pumpkin. I was most displeased. I really felt like kicking the wall, or throwing a piece of greenware at someone, or sacrificing a cat or something. The only choice I had, though, was to make an attempt at repairing the damage. The end result was something that stood on its base again, but looked strikingly unlike the image I was sculpting. But it does stand upright again, so I will consider this a victory.
Naturally, such necessary repair work took an extra hour of my time, which meant that I was forced to miss my Elizabethan prose and poetry class as well. Very disappointing, especially considering that we were continuing our study of bawdy Elizabethan poetry. I have to wonder if Rollins and Baker fully understood the meanings of some of the poems that they included in the textbook. In any case, I have decided that this class is worthwhile, if for no other reason than the fact that I will now be able to get Shakespeare's dirty jokes.
Last night and today were considerably better, mostly because I spent half of the time painting in the studio. I've a work in progress that I'm actually pleased with -- although being "in progress" it still needs several hours of work dedicated to it. But I don't mind. In fact, I'm really looking forward to completing it. Also, Alec gave me lots of really lovely comments on a few of my other paintings last night, which absolutely made my day -- it's rare that I get interesting, creative feedback on this kind of stuff.
Yes, I know what you're thinking -- don't worry, I do have pictures.
Still Life #1 (The Mountain of Junk)
Still Life #2 (Candelabra, Vine, and the "Apple of Discord")
Still Life #3 (Book and Candles)
Work in Progress (Ladders and Some Other Stuff)
I'm particularly fond of the striped fabric in my WIP -- I mean, it looks like fabric! Wow. Now, I just need to get the rest of the painting to look like that...
