Tonight I closed with Jon again; I've been closing with him a lot lately, which makes me happy since he's leaving soon. He always brings in CDs and we play them in the back room. Jon has been trying to accomodate my tastes in music for as long as I can remember, since I generally tend to either dislike his choices or be indifferent towards them.
"One day," he used to say, "I'll find something in my CD collection that you'll get excited about."
Lately he's been pretty good with his musical options: generally a selection of The Church, Sarah McLachlan, U2, The Postal Service, and Velvet Underground. But today, when I asked him where the music was, he got a certain gleam in his eye and said, "I got a new CD today and brought it just for you!" and scampered off to his car right then to retrieve it.
He returned a minute later with a used copy of Depeche Mode's Music for the Masses, one of my favorite of their albums that, for some reason, I don't have in my collection. I was, of course, excited. He was amused and ultimately pleased with himself for bringing the CD.
After we took out the garbage at the end of the night, he held out the CD and said, "Here, this is for you."
"But you just got it!" I said.
"You said you don't have it," he said, handing it to me. "Now you can add it to your collection."
Tonight I realise just how much I'm going to miss working with and being around Jon. He's silly and I make jokes about his fashion sense and inability to grow a decent beard, and his tendency to hang out the drive-through window and chat up female customers -- but he really is a wonderful person and it has been my pleasure to know him. I'm sure a few years from now, when I too leave Austin, he will still be part of my fondest memories of this place. I know his impending departure is what has allowed for my promotion -- he keeps telling all our regular customers how I'm going to "take his place" and lord over the coffee-minions in his stead -- but it's going to be so sad to see him go.
Though of course, I'm sure now I'll think about Jon everytime I hear anything from Music for the Masses.
