A funny thing happened on the way to the union...

I finally ran into Chad after three years of us attending the same school. I haven't seen him since summer 2001.

Jen knows Chad rather well, but for those of you who have no idea who I'm talking about, Chad was our class valedictorian and, for a while, a pretty good friend of mine. We spent a fair amount of time together in our junior year -- we shared a lot of the same classes and interests. I always thought he was a nice, smart, funny guy, and I spent almost all of high school having a huge crush on him. Everyone knew that I liked him. Finally, in the fall of our senior year, I got up the courage to ask him out. I even told him beforehand that we could just go out as friends. He agreed, and we went to the movies, but he sort of freaked out on me, and when I asked him if he'd like to go out again sometime, he told me no because he liked someone else (a skinny, blonde someone... isn't that always the way). After that, he spent most of the rest of our senior year avoiding or ignoring me, and our friendship more or less disintegrated. We never made any effort to contact one another even though we've been at the same university. In freshman year, I think we were even in the same dorms.

Which brings us back to yesterday, when we happened to run into each other. It was, needless to say, a little weird, but he did act like it was a pleasure to see me. I never really thought Chad was that cute in high school, even though I liked him, but he's rather good-looking now. We caught up a bit -- he's doubling in Astronomy and Physics, and going to grad school for linguistics so he can make up languages. I invited him to Micki's going-away party in May, and he invited me to a play the Natural Science Dean scholars were producing, and for which he was the tech director.

So, I went to the play last night. I went for two main reasons:

1. It was six o'clock when I ran into him on campus, and I looked... well, let's just say I did not look my best. Since I was, apparently, not skinny or blonde enough for Chad in high school, I considered it my solemn duty to show up to his little play looking very cute. :)

2. A play by the Natural Science Dean Scholars, none of whom have had any acting or technical experience save Chad? I knew this poor play was going to suck and have a pathetically small audience, so I brought Micki with me; I guess you can call it a pity attendance.

The play -- a performance of Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile -- was not exactly stellar, to put it mildly. It did have its moments; one of the characters was quite funny. I think it had a lot of quick wordplay that didn't get delivered well, and thus passed over the heads of most of the audience. But they had a nice little set, and I'd give all of them an A for effort. We saw Chad for a few minutes afterward and congratulated him for the performance. He told me the Natural Science department was putting on plays now to "show liberal arts a thing or two". Oh, yes, they showed us, all right. :) Chad seemed happy with the production and was pretty popular and friendly with everyone there, though, so good for him.

I do kind of hope he accepts our little invitation to come to Micki's Germany or Bust Extravaganza. We can show off our lovely apartment! Heh heh.
