Late night surprises
So, I came home last night, ill and tired and running fever, to find something small with beady eyes moving around on our couch. Needless to say, I sort of freaked out. Until I turned on the light, and discovered that Micki had brought home a little "surprise" for me, in the form of a kitten.
Micki already has a cat, called Mutt. I seldom have mentioned Mutt, my archnemesis, in this blog. I have... issues with Mutt. Or rather, Mutt has issues with me. She hates me with a ridiculous passion, ever since Micki moved to Austin with me. We suspect that Mutt blames me for the change, and thus harbours an ingrained dislike for me even though we've shared the apartment for over a year. Micki and I gain much entertainment from her antics. All I have to do is take two steps toward the cat, and she'll disappear under a table -- and if I continue to come near her, she'll hiss and swat at me. Aww. Isn't that sweet. If by some chance I manage to catch Mutt, she howls like she's being slowly tortured, even if I'm just petting her or something equally harmless. Eventually her petulant cries turn to angry growls and she'll claw herself away.
So, anyway, I allowed Micki to get a kitten in the hopes that the new cat would redirect all of Mutt's longstanding hatred away from me. After that, we hope that Mutt and the kitten will learn to tolerate each other -- then Mutt will no longer hate me, and no longer hate the kitten, and all will be well. This is our theory, anyway. Part one seems to be going well. Mutt hates the new cat, and stalks her around the room if given the chance. I expect that she would attack the kitten if she was left alone with it for any amount of time. Hopefully, though, they'll grow used to one another.
Originally I gave Micki a two-week "trial period" -- that is, if Mutt still wants to eat the kitten after two weeks, then kitten must go. I am not much of a cat person -- I used to be severely allergic to them when I was a child, and that has sort of affected my liking of cats. However, I am a sucker for baby animals of any sort, and it's a sweet kitten. At the moment, she's sleeping contentedly in my lap, and I'm trying to think of appropriate names.
I am such a pushover.
