I think I could live in this country for the rest of my life and never get tired of the scenery. It's amazing. Right now everything is lush and green, and the best view looks out onto the valley and the hills beyond. You can see small buildings and even a little castle perched on the hillsides, and everything looks down onto the red tile roofs of the houses below.
Castiglion Fiorentino is a medieval walled city, and it's really like a labyrinth of stone streets. Everywhere you turn there are alcoves and stairs leading to entrances and doorways; above there are windows and balconies, many with laundry hanging out to dry. I went out last night with a couple of my roommates and several other members of the group, and we explored a bit of the city and found on of the local pubs, where I nibbled on cheese and several others opted to give themselves hangovers. It was fun though.
I woke up this morning to the sound of the church bells ringing right outside my window. Only one of my other roommates was awake, and she left before I was even completely up and about. I had breakfast out on the sunny terrace, overlooking the valley; I did a quick sketch of the view, as well. One of the churches here is just down the street, so I went to Mass there. I have no idea what the homily was about, but I was able to pick up a few of the appropriate responses and tried my best to follow along in Italian. I'm sure I'll know more by the end of my stay here. I'll probably go back to the church on my own sometime in the week ahead to look at the art there -- I saw several beautiful paintings inside.
We took a tour of the town this afternoon, so I kind of have a general idea of where everything is now. There's a flea market going on today near the gelateria, and after a quick siesta I think several of us are going to go check it out.
I'll try to keep up with this daily. But, since this is me, assume that "daily" means "twice a week". ;)
Till later, everyone. :)
