Random Musings

A highly biased and selective look at the college life of Teri

Thursday, March 28, 2002

It is that time of year again.

You know, I was convinced that among the differences between high school and college, there would also be the absence of that post-Spring Break frenzy of projects, papers and tests that seem to flood in and totally swamp my life. Unfortunately, it seems like I was mistaken. As of right now, I have about five hundred pages of history books to read before my exam next Wednesday, not to mention that five page paper for psychology, the due date for which is fast approaching -- not that I've even picked a topic yet. Then there's my design project, which will be handed in next Tuesday, and which is currently only about one-quarter finished.

In all reality, though, the growing pile of ever-nearing due dates really isn't weighing so ominously against the back of my mind -- yet. Have I really become so desensitized to that niggling guilt that procrastination usually brings? Well, yes -- but I think it's more likely that I know myself so well by this point: I may ignore the due dates for as long as possible, but I consistently get the project or paper completed and submitted for grading in time, although usually at the last minute. Yes, it's a chaotic system, but it works. It's just so much easier to procrastinate about one project at a time, rather than five at once.

Also, there is that little matter of the fan fiction in progress, which consumes a good deal of that time I could use to make headway through the load of aforementioned schoolwork. Yeah, yeah, priorities... whatever. Is it really so bad that I'd rather write than study or read for history? Even if what I'm creating is, in my opinion, pitiful dreck, I'd still rather be thinking and typing at the computer than researching in the library or over at the art building.

Oh, well. In any case, I'm going to have to do a schedule readjustment over the weekend, and get my school life in order. Anyone can procrastinate, but organized procrastination requires talent, you know.

Today, for those of you who somehow weren't aware, is Rebecca J. Anderson's birthday. If those of you who know her haven't done so yet, be sure to wish her a happy birthday!

Hope you have many more joyous birthdays to come, Rebecca.

(And yes, I know I'm blogging about this a bit late. Note the Quote of the Week [yes, it used to be Quote of the Day, but I forgot to change it on Friday, so I thought to go with "Week" to save face. Riiiight. I am aware of the irony]. With that in mind... what did you really expect? A prompt blog? I was too busy with the Birthday Chats.)

It's not even noon, and already today is not a good day.

Once again, I have slept through my alarm clock, thus missing my morning art class. This is not good. I can only miss three art classes -- and after the third absence, my average will drop a whole letter grade. And I'm not exactly sure how many days I have missed in that class. I believe I've only been absent once -- making this the second offense -- but I'm not positive.

Now, granted, I am a very deep sleeper, but my Wal-Mart quality alarm clock is evidently not doing its job very well anymore. I actually set my alarm a full 30 minutes before I actually have to get up -- and not just so I can hit the snooze button a few times. I actually need that time for the stupid thing to wake me up. Unfortunately, sometimes it apparently doesn't work; while I very clearly recall turning on my alarm last night, I do not recall shutting it off this morning, and though I slept in for over two hours, the alarm was not buzzing incessantly the entire time. I wonder if this thing has an automatic shut-off after it beeps for an extended period of time, or if I just turn it off in my sleep. Or if my roommate turns it off after it goes on for too long, and doesn't bother to wake me up. I wouldn't put that sort of thing past her.

Oh, well. It looks like I'll have to go back to my tried and true method of waking up: turning my alarm to the Tejano station. It is the world's most annoying way to start the day -- thus the reason I have tried to avoid it -- but hey, you've got to do what you've got to do.

So, in other news, Alec and I finally finished the fourth part of The Arithmancer's Apprentice yesterday, bringing the total word count up to... 34,000 words. Wow. I can't believe I've written so much and spent that much time on this fan fiction. I am a nut. But, I'm a nut with only about 16,000 words to go now. Yay!

Unfortunately for me, I have a few other things I must attend to as well. For one, it's that time again -- Test Time! I love how all my classes have tests within the same week. And you see on the side of the blog there, where it says I've been reading The Way of Duty because I have to for history class? Yeah, well, I lied. I haven't even opened the book yet. Really, I meant to, but I just haven't got around to it yet... and the test is coming up. Hm. Although, I do have the comfort of knowing that I can bluff my way through a history exam with relative ease. I didn't read most of The Unredeemed Captive either, and when that question showed up on the test, I thought I was done for. I was so banking on a question about The Puritan Dilemma, but no. However, I still came out with an 86% on the exam. Nice. I love essay tests.

Oh, and let's see... I have that art history quiz tomorrow -- not that I'm actually going to study for it -- and my art history exam is next Wednesday. And my psychology research paper is due in the middle of April... well, I have plenty of time. The procrastination continues. With pleasure.

Currently listening to: "You'll Never Get Over Me" by a-ha

Things I Could (and Should) Be Doing:

1. Laundry, considering I do sort of need clothes to wear today.
2. Something "fun" with my brother and sister. Happy family time, you know.
3. My art project, which is due on Monday and is not even halfway finished.
4. Writing fanfiction. Hey, at least it would be something constructive.

Yet, here I am, wasting more time on the Internet. I am so addicted.

So, last night, I was (predictably) upstairs on the computer, when my mother yells at me shrilly.

"Teri!! You got something from Amazon.com!!"

"Huh?" I answered.

I stumbled downstairs, where Mom was inspecting said package with a suspicious, baleful eye.

"What did you order on my credit card?!" she demanded sharply.

"Nothing!" I insisted, and she reluctantly handed over the box with an incredulous glance. Upon opening, I discovered that the package actually contained a video, The Court Jester, a comedy I've been told I should see, and will watch this afternoon. The lovely present, of course, was from none other than Cally Perry, Wonderful Friend and Gift-Giver Extraordinaire.

"So what was in the box?" my mother asked.

"A get-well gift from one of my online friends," I said.

She shook her head. "Your online friends are sending you gifts now? Who was it from?" She said this with a very thinly concealed smile, and a slightly worried look. I can tell she wondered if I might be receiving gifts from complete strangers overseas or something.

"From Cally," I answered, "She lives on the east coast."

"Oh," said Mom. "Well, you'd better send her a thank-you note."

And I will. Thanks, Cally. You rock!

Currently listening to: "The Bottom Line" by Depeche Mode

Why does slow, melancholic music like this make me feel really good? Maybe it's because "The Bottom Line" has to be one of the most beautiful songs Depeche Mode ever produced, in my personal opinion. I've always said Depeche Mode is my favorite eighties band, but in point of fact, I really much prefer their later albums from the nineties. Of course, that was the time period when Depeche Mode was in Depressed Mode, but still, when you compare songs like "A Photograph of You" or even "Never Let Me Down Again" (which, actually, is still one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs, anyway) to songs such as "The Bottom Line" or "When The Body Speaks" -- it's quite easy to see the difference in the quality and depth and sound. Martin Gore's lyrics have gotten better and better, for one thing, but the whole ambiance changes from that eighties dance wave to a much nicer blend of music.

All right, so that was almost completely pointless. I'm going to go chat now.

Health Status Update

Well, the good news is: I'm not hurting as much anymore. The bad news is: no one is still quite sure what is wrong with me. The popular theory of stomach inflammation still holds, and since the medication I'm currently on seems to have caused a distinct improvement in the level of pain, my doctor has simply increased the dosage and sent me on my way. No more trips to the ER for me -- which is a great relief, considering my all-too-recent stay at the medical nightmare that is Tomball Regional Hospital.

So, it looks like I am at least getting back to normal. My Spring Break has been completely washed up, but at least I'm not dying or writhing in excruciating pain. That's certainly something.

Many thanks to all of you who have kept me in your thoughts and prayers over the past few days. I really appreciate it.

I'm a Twinkie!
What Snack Food are YOU?

Spongy, yellow, and an utter mystery, you're the X-file of snack foods! More people ponder you than consume you, but you don't mind -- you get to remain uneaten and...er...free to do Twinkish things!

Mmm. Twinkies. I really wish I could have one of those right now, even if it is the X-file of snack foods... and could possibly kill me. But oh, well. Death by Twinkie sounds pretty good compared to the wacky diet I have to be on at the moment.

But anyway. Excuse me while I run off to do Twinkish things.

Top Ten Reasons Why Teri Hates Hospitals

10. After way too many tests, I still hurt for unknown reasons. Ouch.
9. I know the hospital gowns are really stylish, but the slit up the back does nothing for me.
8. Four different doctors – and none of them MY doctor – repeating the same questions. All of them wrong.
7. What the quack doctor says: “We’ll have to do a CT scan.” What I hear: “We’ll have to cut in.”
6. Hospital food. Need I say more?
5. Clear liquid diet. Groan.
4. It’s pretty sad when I have to spend the night in the ER because there are no spare beds anywhere else.
3. Competent ER nurses are almost extinct.
2. You really feel secure and taken care of when you have to actually alert the staff that a woman down the hall has been crying desperately for help.
1. One word: needles.

Currently listening to: "Behind the Wheel" by Depeche Mode

Behind the wheel is, of course, where I will be in a couple of hours, but other than that, the song has almost no relevance to my current mood. Foo Fighters' "Everlong" is a lot more appropriate, actually.

Now listening to: "Everlong" by Foo Fighters

Excellent.

At the moment, I am packing to go -- and I'm blogging at the same time, because part of my idea of "packing" is transferring various files onto floppy disk so I can work on them while at home. None of these files involves homework, of course. That psychology paper is due in April; I don't need to write it now! Ha ha ha!

I'm not sure what, if anything, I'll have to blog about this week. I suppose I could regale you all with Coffee Shop Stories. Oh, well. It's Spring Break. Yay!

What is it about these silly character tests? Oh, well. Check it out. I am the one.

click to take it!

You sometimes doubt yourself - who you are and what you can do. You're a curious person, with questions and concerns about the world. You go along with the crowd and aim to please others to your best ability. But when you finally discover what you're really capable of, you can do some serious ass kickin'! You're fast and furious, and you will always stick up for what you believe, and those who you care for. Not only that, but you're charming and charismatic, so you get along with people well, and others often look up to you.

Riiiight. Actually, I'm kind of scared; this is way too close of an association with Keanu Reeves for my tastes. Hee hee. Of course, I actually dressed up as Agent Smith when a group of friends and I performed a Matrix-based routine for the San Diego Comic-Con Masquerade. You want to see some really embarrassing pictures of me? Check it out:

Teri and friends as Agent Smith, Neo, and Trinity
Close-up

The men's suit does absolutely nothing for my figure. Note to self: Do not make a habit of dressing up as a man. You can't pull it off. (But that is a good thing, right?)

Now, if I had gotten Agent Smith on the character test, then I would really have to worry...

Currently listening to: "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" by Pet Shop Boys

You know, so many band names just boggle my mind...

So, today is Wednesday, which is nothing special, except that Wednesday is nearly Thursday, which is almost Friday, which is almost the weekend. And, as many of you know, this weekend is especially important to a college student. Yes; this Friday will herald the beginning of the week of endless nights, raucous parties, and constant alcohol consumption that we more casually know as Spring Break.

Of course, you know me: needless to say, I shall not be partaking of the usual Spring Break festivities that will leave the rest of the college-age population in the stupor of a week-long hangover. I, instead, will be traveling home and working at our family-owned coffee shop all week. Am I fun, or what? I'm living it up, baby.

Seriously though, I am looking forward to the week off. I may be working, but it will definitely be nice to have a break from my classes, I'll get to go out with my friends, and I should still have time to write and chat and do all of my usual online activities. Of course, I say that now; watch me end up with no free time whatsoever. Murphy's Law, you know.

But still. I'm eagerly anticipating Spring Break. Besides, I'd much rather have the endless supply of coffee than an endless supply of parties, anyway. Oh, and the paycheck I'll get will be nice, too.

Which X-Files Character Are You?

According to this lame personality quiz, I am most like FBI lab geek Danny Pendrell, followed by the Lone Gunmen, Byers, Langly, and Frohike, in that order. I see my geekiness seems to be weighed especially heavily on this test. And it doesn't even have a nifty graphic I can post. Puh.

I have been searching desperately through the events of the past week, but there hasn't been anything of any consequence that's worth a Random Musing. And that, folks, is the reason I thought I would give up on the blog. What can I say, I lead a fairly boring life.

Of course, I am blogging about having nothing to blog about, so I guess that's something. Or rather, it's nothing, isn't it?

I'm really striving to keep this thing vaguely associated with my college experiences, as opposed to being a collection of my online adventures. Ha ha. I'm failing miserably, aren't I? But at least it hasn't gotten to the point of being nothing more than Teri's Rant-O-Vision. Yet.

Speaking of Rant-O-Vision, friend and fellow fan fiction author R.J. Anderson recently asked why I wasn't using this thing for my rants -- the ones which I usually provide in chat, of course. Well, I actually did want it to be a continuation of sorts for the original "Random Musings" e-mail, which does not include long-winded dissertations about fan fiction, writing, and associated distractions or grievances. So, I'm trying to keep with the "Random Musings" theme, at least partly. Which makes college-related rants perfectly OK, although not necessarily as interesting.

But, I'll admit, I know a hopeless cause when I see one. I give myself about another week before I change the subtitle of the blog and give up on this "theme" business entirely. Hee. I am so predictable.

62% addicted to Instant Messenger. How about you?

This is sad. Pathetic. What an insult. Sixty-two percent? I am WAY more addicted than that. I mean, three days without my nightly binge of AIM sends me into Chat Withdrawl. Come on.
