Today's Crit

Regarding my painting:

Fellow Art Student: It feels very academic; like it's just an exercise. It doesn't do enough. It doesn't have space. It's flat. Just an optical illusion.
Me: *flabbergasted* *crushed*
Professor: You know, I disagree with everything you just said. This is art! It's one of the best paintings that anyone has done all semester! *raves*
Me: YES! I am THE WINNER!!

The sad part is, I really did shout "Yes! I am the winner!" in the middle of the critique, which probably wasn't the best idea in the world. Some people think I have an ego now. I can't imagine why.

Don't all people who create something have egos? It's unavoidable.

What I do is not art, but upon finding a stupid bug in someone's code there is a long moment when I think about how I'm going to tell him/her without it sounding like I think they're stupid. And the competition that goes on during design reviews! (" - my way is faster! - No idiot, your way will take us extra four months! Didn't you read the Spolsky article I've sent you? - No, your idea is stupid, it will never work, and if it will it's too easy and I don't want to work on such a project")
