After a semester of classes at the University of Texas, I've finally sort of gotten used to the fact that many of my teachers expect me to refer to them by their first names. Of course, I still feel kind of funny calling a teacher "Bob" rather than "Professor Jensen", but at least it doesn't send my deeply ingrained Respect For Teachers into orbit any more.
Like my art teachers (Daphane and Sarah), and like my art history professor (Eileen), my psychology teacher, when he introduced himself, also mentioned his preference that we address him by first name. "I know it says 'Richard' on my syllabus, but no one calls me that," he said. I expected him to go by a nickname like "Rich" or "Rick", but then he clarified: "I generally go by my middle name.
"Call me Sherlock."
Sherlock. SHERLOCK. There is no way I can call him by first name with a straight face. Although I'm still sort of tempted to ask if he has a teaching assistant named Watson.
